Huntington Family Centers’ Youth Resource Program has received consistent support from the Community Foundation to serve high-risk youth and their families. The program focuses on strengthening the relationship between Westside teens and their families, community members and schools or employers. Youth Resource Workers serve as mentors that help the youth assess their strengths and development needs. They also work to develop specific goals to complete their education and find employment with the hope that this will reduce the likelihood that the youth will become involved with the criminal justice system.
After its first year of funding, the Youth Resource Program saw a 70% increase in school attendance among its participants, including the pursuit for GEDs. Families also reported improved relationships between parents and children.
“I started with the program when I was 13,” said Joshua Chaplin, “Initially, I was really just looking to have fun. I got more out of the program than I expected. My life would probably have been different if it wasn’t for my mentor’s help. After I finish my GED, I hope to enroll in college or join the military.”
