Alzheimer’s Association Central NY Chapter – Kirkpatrick Day Program

Last Updated Oct 2010

The Kirkpatrick Day Program, located in Syracuse’s Inner Harbor area, saw a need to replace and refurbish the sitting room of their center. The program seeks to provide a safe and healthy atmosphere for the senior citizens suffering from dementia. Leaders of the program became worried that the program old, worn chairs were a safety hazard, as fabric staples were coming undone and exposed.

A Community Foundation grant allowed the program to purchase 20 new specially-designed chairs for the sitting room that provide physical support and safety for the elderly participants while they enjoy the center’s daily activities. The new chairs are ergonomically designed for the elderly population, featuring ease of use, hidden mechanics, easy cleanup and water-resistant fabric.

The Kirkpatrick Day Program, an adult day program that specializes in the care of people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, is administered by the Alzheimer’s Association Central New York Chapter. Participants engage in various exercises, including puzzles and singing, which slow the effects of the disease. The Alzheimer’s Association Central New York Chapter is a non-profit voluntary health organization dedicated to finding prevention methods, treatments and an eventual cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
