Strategic Partnership Fund off to a Great Start

Last Updated Nov 2009

Earlier this year, we launched our new Strategic Partnership Fund to address the concerns local nonprofit organizations were facing in this economic environment. The fund was established to support partnerships to maximize the delivery of community services while making efficient use of limited staff time and financial resources.

Since its establishment this spring, the fund has already awarded three exciting grants. The following organizations are combining their resources in unique ways that will enhance and build efficient community services.

Contact Community Services & Mental Health Association of Onondaga County (MHA) - $7,500

Contact and MHA developed a unique strategic partnership during a time when there was a leadership transition at the MHA. Each organization retained its unique identity and 501(c)(3) status, but agreed to merge into a shared office and integrate leadership, governance and administrative functions. Our grant will be used for formal business planning and the creation of new management systems that will strengthen the organizations as they pursue joint ventures and programming in the days to come.

Jewish Home of Central New York & Syracuse Jewish Family Services - $10,200

This grant will be used to upgrade a shared telephone and computer system, as well as assist with activities to formalize their new shared structure. These separate 501(c)(3) organizations were able to formally merge and consolidate leadership and administrative functions to enhance their services to the elderly and needy in Central New York. In time, they anticipate substantial savings to their operations while also opening new lines of revenue through the strength of their shared efforts.

Child Care Solutions (CCS) - $15,915

CCS has begun an adventure in regionalization. CCS recently expanded its early learning and child development services to Cayuga County at the urging of New York State when the Child Care Council of the Finger Lakes closed down in June 2009. Our grant funds the critical infrastructure and equipment upgrades necessary at the Syracuse home office to support the expansion.

The Strategic Partnership Fund awards grants up to $25,000 in support of collaborative ventures among nonprofits that seek to enhance or expand services within a new, cost-effective operational model. We anticipate that these successful activities will foster wider community dialogue about partnerships and restructuring and will serve as models for strengthening the nonprofit sector, especially during difficult economic times.

If you are considering establishing a joint venture, funds may be available for nonrecurring costs specifically related to implementing strategic partnerships.
