John F. Marsellus Sabbatical Program
The Central New York Community Foundation is pleased to provide the John F. Marsellus Sabbatical Program, created in May 2000 in memory of John's desire to enhance the leadership capacity of applicant CEOs and senior management staff of Central New York not-for-profit organizations.

Mission

Enrich lives through personal and professional reflection and development.

Vision

The John F. Marsellus Sabbatical program is a sought-after sabbatical opportunity for not-for-profit executives that enriches the human spirit, inspires personal and professional excellence and nurtures the curiosity, creativity and imagination essential for leadership success. This vision is based upon the beliefs that:
  • A focused time of reflection and renewal refreshes the human spirit and enriches leadership.

  • Life-long learning is essential for creative and effective leadership.

  • Investment in not-for-profit organizations benefits the community as a whole.

Approach

The John F. Marsellus Sabbatical Program offers sabbatical opportunities to two selected not-for-profit executives each year. The sabbatical opportunities will provide executives with an environment to research, study and reflect for a period of four weeks to further the executive's personal and professional growth and development. The four consecutive weeks will be structured as follows:
  • Week one: Unrestricted personal time

  • Week two: Personal time for reflection at a retreat site within New York state, chosen by recipient

  • Week three: Professional development activity within the United States

  • Week four: Personal time to document experience and prepare for return to work environment
The central idea is to create the conditions and the environment that will enable a not-for-profit executive to choose to engage in professional and personal development as a life-long endeavor of learning. The sabbatical experience is intended to stimulate the process of enrichment, refreshment and renewal.

Applications must be received by October 31st for sabbaticals to be taken during the following calendar year. For more information, please refer to the Marsellus Sabbatical brochure.
