Designated Funds
Helping a select not-for-profit agency is best accomplished through the establishment of a designated fund with one or more named beneficiary agencies.
Perhaps you have been supporting one or more favorite not-for-profit groups with annual gifts and you would like to have this support continued after your lifetime. This can be accomplished by establishing a Designated Fund. Of course, each charity could be left with an individual bequest in your Will, but the concern is that the charity may use the money too quickly or not always perform well in the area that interests you. You also know that with a designated fund through the Community Foundation, your annual contribution will be sent to them from your named fund. This will keep your name and spirit at the forefront for the future leadership of your favorite agencies.
In your Will, you can provide a bequest to the Central New York Community Foundation to establish a permanent endowment fund and ask that the net income be sent to one or more of your favorite charities. These donations are then sent in your name each year, based on a spending policy that allows for the contributions to continue growing each year. The Community Foundation monitors the designated agencies to be sure there is always a need.
